Celebrate the red, white, and blue with this 4th of July French Toast Casserole! This crowd-pleasing breakfast is baked until golden brown, dusted with powdered sugar, and then decorated with fresh berries.
French toast is one of my favorite breakfast recipes, however I always have a hard time making it on the griddle, and the bread always seem to fall apart. French toast casserole solved that problem. It is easy to make with no dipping or flipping and comes out perfect every time!
What type of bread to use
Any type of crusty bread can be used for this recipe. Look for a 15 ounce loaf of Italian or French bread in the bakery section of your supermarket. If you'd rather use a loaf of sandwich bread, be sure that it is stale. If the bread is too soft, your casserole will become soggy.
how to make
First, preheat your oven to 400 degrees.
Next, cut the loaf of bread into 1-inch pieces and place into a greased 9x13 baking pan.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cinnamon, and vanilla until combined. Pour the egg mixture over the bread. With the back of a spatula, press the bread pieces into the egg mixture until all of the bread is coated.
Bake for 35-40 minutes or until golden brown.
Let the casserole sit for 15 minutes, then dust with powdered sugar and decorate with fresh blueberries and strawberries.
Serve with a drizzle of maple syrup or a dollop of whipped cream. Enjoy!
