Celebrate the red, white, and blue with this 4th of July French Toast Casserole! This crowd-pleasing breakfast is baked until golden brown, dusted with powdered sugar, and then decorated with fresh berries.
Cut the loaf of bread into 1-inch pieces and place into a greased 9x13 baking pan.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cinnamon, and vanilla until combined.
Pour the egg mixture over the bread. With the back of a spatula, press the bread pieces into the egg mixture until all of the bread is saturated.
Bake for 35-40 minutes or until golden brown.
Let the casserole sit for 15 minutes, then dust with powdered sugar and decorate with fresh blueberries and strawberries.
Serve with a drizzle of maple syrup or a dollop of whipped cream. Enjoy!
Notes
Any type of crusty bread can be used for this recipe. Look for a 15 ounce loaf of Italian or French bread in the bakery section of your supermarket. If you'd rather use a loaf of sandwich bread, be sure to let it sit overnight uncovered so it becomes stale. If the bread is too soft, your casserole will become soggy.
This French Toast Casserole can be prepared, covered, and stored in the refrigerator overnight, and then baked the next morning if you choose.
Make this casserole all year long and mix it up with your favorite fruits. Blackberries, raspberries, peaches, and nectarines are also great!
